Asperger's Disease

Adult Asperger's Disease patients can maintain long-term relationships; nevertheless, due to their neurological inability to communicate effectively on an intimate level, there may be lots of difficulties. Even dating new partners can be a problem as these patients do not understand the basic language of love and maybe puzzled on several occasions. This might occur even to an academically gifted individual.

Recent research results have shown that Asperger's patients have the same urge of being sexually active as the rest of the masses, however they are not able to handle the intimacy most of the times and are clueless on how to react at such times. In fact the divorce ratio amongst Asperger patients is about 80%.

Being associated to a sufferer of this disorder, you may experience your own set of marital problems. One of the most important concerns will be the lack of intimacy between the two partners and exchange of emotions between the two. This is by far the most common reason for a marriage breakdown. The neurological breakdown makes the sufferer's of this disorder emotionally disconnected from others.

In a marriage relationship, the normal partner may willingly accommodate the lack of intimacy and emotions in the relation by simply giving in more but a new bunch of problems arise when children arrive.

It becomes difficult for the normal partner to fulfill the emotional needs of their partner as well as the child. At the same time, the child might also go through some suffering due to the lack of empathy or emotions. This is when the arguments and misunderstandings increase and hence such marriages usually end up with a divorce.

For all those around the Asperger's patient, group counseling might help a lot in learning to deal with their feelings of hurt, depression, anger and disappointment. Taking group therapies or getting associated with a support group may also help in overcoming feelings of isolation while being with the sufferer.

As far as the sufferers are concerned, counseling may be of some assistance, however, social training might help a lot in dealing with others, especially when there are partners and kids involved.

Social skills training include interpreting the facial expressions, associating them with certain emotions and learning body language skills. It also teaches the sufferer to communicate more effectively and understand everything that is being communicated to them.

Such skills have to be taught to the sufferer and do not come naturally to them. However, such a training procedure makes it easier for them to interact socially, understand and avoid social isolation.

If the patient is in an active relationship then he must ensure that he is willing to make a change and ready to negotiate in difficult situations of their courtship. The attitude of both the Asperger sufferer and the partner are essential for successful learning process.

It calls for hard work and patience for partners and family members along with the willingness to accept positive criticism on the part of the Asperger's patient to ease out the stress in the relationships. Nevertheless, any relationship can get better with improved interactions and understanding.
